Spina Bifida Statistics

  • In California, 2.08 babies are born with Spina Bifida per 10,000 births (data collection period: 2001-2005).

  • Recent research has estimated that the number of Americans living with all forms of Spina Bifida may be as high as 166,000. Based on this national estimate and the birth rate of Spina Bifida, approximately 7,645 people with Spina Bifida live in California.

  • In California, there are an estimated 11.6 million women of childbearing age.  All are at-risk of a Spina Bifida pregnancy.

  • Hispanic/Latino women are at the highest risk (1.5 to 2 times greater than non-Hispanic whites) for delivering a baby with Spina Bifida or another neural tube defect, yet remain the least likely to be taking folic acid.  CDC reports that Latinas in the United States consume the least amount of folic acid and have the least knowledge about folic acid among racial or ethnic groups in this country.  In California, an estimated 36 percent of the population (13 million) is of Hispanic origin.
